CAN I TOUCH YOUR HAIR

An AW23 womenswear collection focused on celebrating black hair. This collection is based on African/ Caribbean hair, looking into different hair types, styles, and textures such as: braids, plats, afros, dreadlocks, curl, and waves. It is my way of enlightening people on what it is really like to have black hair, mainly focusing on how beautiful and interesting it is. A story of the journey i have been/ still am on in getting to know my hair and learning to love it from hearing other people’s hair stories. Each look will be exploring multiple hair textures and shapes; the last look will be based on my hair now focused on how other people see my hair.

Silky, soft, and bouncy fabrics will be used to create new textures, as well as materials hand made to give an original feel to the collection. Hand made textures which are made to explain that because it is different you and you want to reach out and touch it doesn’t mean you should. Silks and satins will be used to represent the silk pillow cases and bonnets that are used to help our hair as we sleep. Durable fabrics like denims and cotton drills will be used to show how strong our hair is. A limited, sophisticated colour palette of modern hues from greens, yellows and black, as well as an ecru to add a refreshing touch on the collection. Each look will have an elongated silhouette the organic silhouettes defined by the specific hair type and the shapes found in research.
