DIRTY, FILTHY, PARADISE.

My collection is a Fall/Winter 22 menswear theme. It aims to sit alongside rising high-end contemporary labels such as Fear of God and Aime Leon Dore.

My concept draws upon themes of teen angst and rebellion. The collection is rooted in subculture, telling an honest story of Skateboarding and 90’s Grunge culture, and the parallels that are drawn between them, using timeless menswear garments as a foundation to build upon. Skate culture is often viewed as counter-cultural, from its raw street roots it is seen as rebellious, yet it acquires real freedom and community. Skating is unique through its use of thrifting and styling. Borrowing from other cultures to create its own authentic image. Similarly, the grunge movement that boomed in the 90’s provided a voice and image for teens that felt socially alienated and longed for freedom. The cultures lazy style and authentic image provide a key sense of the collection.

Silhouettes are generous, referencing boxy and cocoon oversize shapes. Asymmetry is a running theme, providing an unusual twist on recognisable pieces. Fabrics are a mix of practicality and luxury. They provide key textures and colours, alternating from distinct mohairs to crisp cotton twills and gabardines. Details come in the form of functional pockets, unexpected seam lines, heavy hardware and intended distressing and repair. Print work is inspired by iconic halftone posters from the grunge and punk eras. The colours are a juxtaposition of themselves, ranging from heavy blacks to bursts of acid like colour.
