Resonance

Resonance is a premium ready-to-wear collection rooted in personal history. Discovering stories of my great-grandmother's service in the Women's Land Army across the Cumbrian landscape and later retracing those same hills during my own Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, I became aware of a repeated history connecting us with a joint sense of endurance, purpose and pride. Two women, the same landscape, one hundred years apart.

Print sits at the heart of this collection, used as a tool for storytelling — layering memory, identity, and landscape into wearable form. Combining screen printing and digital print development, the work began with extensive primary and archival research, archive photography, landscape documentation, and visual records of the Women's Land Army, translated into a colour palette that holds both eras simultaneously. Earthy, muted tones drawn from the land sit alongside bolder, graphic marks that bring the work into a contemporary context: grounded in history, but alive in the present.

Screen printing honours the physical, hands-on quality of the concept. Digital print development pushes the imagery into something more layered, reflecting the collaged nature of memory and inherited history. Together, the two methods mirror the project's central inspiration: past meets present.

Fabric manipulation and texture draw from the tactile qualities of that terrain: contoured, grounded, alive. Utilitarian structure meets adaptable silhouette, reflecting the balance between strength and ease that defines both women's stories.

A key motif is the badge, the Women's Land Army emblem, alongside my Duke of Edinburgh award badge. Representing achievement earned through the same landscape, a century apart.

Resonance is a celebration of where we come from, and a reminder of what that makes us proud.
